This South Jubilee character home was a great example of why painting an older Victoria home can involve much more than simply applying a fresh coat of paint.
Years of previous coatings had built up on the home's wood siding, and sections of the exterior were experiencing significant paint failure. Before we could think about the finished product, our team had to put considerable work into preparing and restoring the exterior.
One of the biggest challenges with this project was the number of old layers of paint that had accumulated on the home's original wood siding.
Over time, these older coatings had become brittle and compromised. Applying a new coating directly over them would create additional top coat tension, as the new paint cures, it can put stress on the weaker layers underneath and cause those old coatings to release from the wood, leading to even more peeling, bubbling and paint failure.
For that reason, our goal was to remove as much of the compromised old paint as reasonably possible before repainting.
This required extensive scraping and sanding throughout the exterior. Rather than simply removing the visibly loose pieces, the crew worked back failing areas to find a more stable edge and create the best possible surface for the new coating.
The project included significant scraping and sanding, spot priming of exposed wood, replacing failed caulking, and addressing deteriorated areas throughout the exterior.
We also completed extensive carpentry repairs, replacing and restoring deteriorated wood before painting.
On an older character home like this, the preparation is often just as important as the painting itself. Putting additional time into the substrate before applying the new coating helps reduce future failures and gives the finished paint system the best opportunity to perform properly.
Once the repairs and preparation were complete, we repainted the home's horizontal wood siding and soffits, window and door frames, exterior trim, posts and beams, railings, doors, and decorative architectural accents.
All selected surfaces received two full finish coats, with exterior products and sheens selected for the different siding and trim surfaces.
The finished project showcases exactly what we love about working on Victoria's older homes.
Rather than trying to make the house look new, the goal was to restore what was already there. The contrasting siding, trim and accent colours highlight the home's architectural details, while the extensive preparation and carpentry addressed years of deterioration underneath the previous coatings.
The result is a refreshed exterior that retains the personality and character of the original home.
